APPEARANCE

Mei, like all Auri women, is built very small. Standing at a mere 5’1, she is slightly taller than average for her race, but oftentimes finds herself craning her neck to make eye contact with those around her anyway. This does nothing to affect her confident and bold disposition, however, and she carries her tiny frame with a strength which can rarely be swayed.
Straight, silky blue hair pools about her jaw and frames her face, providing a stark contrast against her warm peach-colored skin. Her body is adorned with pearly white scales, which match her slender horns and unusually long tail. Beneath slim eyebrows are twin jewels of amethyst encased in icy lavender limbal rings. There is often a calculating or inquisitive look in those eyes; seldom does she regard anyone with wide-eyed friendliness.

Mei was born to a broken family in a country she hardly remembers. To avoid oppression by the Garleans, her father enlisted as a soldier and fought to earn respect and honor. Her mother, on the other hand, stole her brother away and fled to the Steppes to live with the Malaguld. Mei still doesn’t understand why her mother didn’t take her with them and she doubts she ever will, considering she doesn’t even remember what they look like.
After many years spent earning their place in Garlean society, Mei and her father moved to Garlemald. Despite whatever respect they had been promised, the culture they came to know was bitter and unkind. Not long after their arrival, Mei's father was stationed in Gyr Abania, where he died later that year. Mei was then left alone in a country which had no love for her.
Despite the loneliness and cruelty she faced, Garlemald’s hand was the only one that ever fed her, and for that her loyalty remained undiminished. Still, she had to work for her survival, and so she followed in her father’s footsteps to become a soldier, hoping that she would earn some sort of respect and honor just as he had. Changing her surname from Hachisuka to Tenebryn, she fully adopted Garlean culture as her own and fought hard for recognition in the country she now swore her life to. Times were hard and she struggled more often than not, but she convinced herself that a fulfilling life was better than a happy one - until she was stationed in Gyr Abania.
While the Garleans held most of the power in that broken desert, the Resistance fought back hard. An ambush cut down everyone in Mei’s squadron and in a sudden panic she fled, terrified of suffering the same fate as her father. Now a deserter, there is no longer a place for her in the land she convinced herself to love - nor is there place for her anywhere else as the person she has turned herself into.

Unable to return to Garlemald after abandoning her station in Gyr Abania, Mei fled to Eorzea - where she has lived for nearly two years now. She continues to use her Garlean surname, as she still has a strange fondness for the culture which hated her so much. To get by, she collects bounties and lost treasure, and scams the occasional blind fool should food become too hard to come by.
Recently she has joined a Highlander named Hjalvard Stormhearth in his travels. He keeps her fed and isn’t terribly difficult to get along with, although it’s awkward for her to spend so much time with a Gyr Abanian. Sometimes she worries he might know where she hails from.
